A Brief Guide To Admissions

Sometimes receiving end-of-life care at home is not the best option for various reasons.  Brian's House would like to welcome anyone who is in hospice care.

Below are the general eligibility criteria for admission.  Once the decision is made that the best option is to stay at Brian’s House, a more detailed list of eligibility as well as ineligibility will be provided.

GENERAL ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINES

  1. The individual requires supportive care due to safety needs, weakness, or inability to perform one or more self-care activities and does not have someone available 24 hours a day to assist the individual at home.
  2. Has a life-expectancy of one month or less.
  3. Is seeking comfort care or symptom management and not curative treatment.
  4. Currently enrolled, or agrees to enroll, in a hospice program.
  5. Has Durable Power of Attorney, Advanced Directives, Patient Advocate and Do Not Resuscitate forms.
  6. The individual/family/authorized representative  agrees to pay a daily fee for room and board.
  7. Does not have an infectious disease requiring adaptation of the house and/or staff.

Care Services

Our staff and volunteers strive to provide quality care to our guests and their family.  We work closely with our guests’ hospice providers to provide pain management and symptom control.  We want our guests to feel that they are at home when staying with us.

We provide:

  • 24-hour care from trained staff and volunteers.
  • Companionship, when loved ones can’t be there.
  • Home-cooked meals served any time.
  • Laundry and housekeeping services.
  • A shower room including a “wheel-in” shower.
  • A large sunroom with TV and comfortable furniture.
  • A kitchen and dining room area for use by guests and families.
  • Special outdoor spaces including a patio and gardens.
  • A quiet room, when a private place is needed.

We believe that end-of-life care also extends to family and friends of our guests.  We will be glad to answer any questions, be there if someone needs a shoulder to lean on or just someone to listen.  One of the things that makes Brian’s House special is that we are just right outside the door or around the corner if we are needed.  If loved ones can’t be there, we are just a phone call away.

Our staff and volunteers work closely with our guests’ choices of hospice providers.  This is the list of providers that are located in Bay, Midland, and Saginaw Counties.  We also will work with an accredited hospice providers in other counties.

FAQ

We know that you may have many questions about staying at Brian’s House.  We have put together the most common questions we receive.  If you can’t find the answer here, please feel free to call us 989.892.4616 to talk with our staff or volunteers.

There are no set hours.  We encourage people to stop by anytime.  The doors are locked between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. and visitors are asked to use the doorbell to contact staff and volunteers to be let in.

There is usually one or two per shift, depending on the number of guests staying with us.

We have Certified Nursing Assistants and Medical Assistants 24/7.  Our staff are in constant contact with the hospice nurse that is overseeing our guests’ medical care.

We can accommodate up to six guests.

Yes.  We do not receive government funding, Medicare/Medicaid or private insurance reimbursement.  Therefore we charge a $200 admission fee and guests are charged a daily room and board fee based on a sliding scale.  We do not want to turn anyone away regardless of the ability to pay.   Brian’s House Community Group has “Helping Hands Fund” that will assist families to help cover some of  the room and board costs that are associated with a stay at Brian’s House.  This fund is made possible through generous donations from the community. 

Yes, we encourage family photos and decor as long as the items are not hung on the walls. We can remove a item off the wall temporarily while photos can be hung as a replacement while our guests are with us.

Yes.  We strongly encourage loved ones helping with care their loved one that is our guest.

Yes.  We allow family members to make the determination if having children visit is appropriate.

Yes, there are cots available

Meals are whenever the guest wants to eat

Whenever the guest is used to going to bed.

Family and loved ones who are visiting are welcome bring in food or use our kitchen to prepare food for themselves and their guests.

Yes, and please put the guest’s name and date on it.

The staff and volunteers do the guest’s laundry.

No, but there is a portable phone for guest’s use.  The number is 989.892.4616

Yes. We welcome pets for a short visit. Please check with our staff to make arrangements.

Yes, but it must be prearranged with the staff.

Yes. Please fill out the application and drop it off at Brian’s House.
